Trouble Brews for Starbucks

I saw a news report on BBC World saying that Starbucks was closing 600 stores around the US and this made me very sad because I love Starbucks. Their drinks are one thing I would spend money on. Here's a BBC article on the closing:

And the reporter said that one of the main reasons is because a lot of the Starbucks' are now drive-thrus and people are so keen on conserving fuel now that they aren't using the drive-thrus. So that is why the sales are going down.
I completely disagree with this idea. It's very illogical (it's a "false cause" logical fallacy, I think it's called). Just because the gas prices went up, doesn't mean it made people stop going to Starbucks. There are lots of options to avoid the drive-thru. One can walk to the Starbucks or drive passed it and park their car. I agree with the fact that the drinks are very expensive and people are cutting back. But you can't really use that as an excuse.
So I thought that report was very confusing. It seems like people are using rising gas prices and global warming as scapegoats for a lot of things. I wish I could find that segment to rewatch...
If anyone agrees that drive-thrus are the cause of business drops, can you shed some light? Because I'm a little confused and annoyed at that report...
